Issue 15

Aug-October 2026

It’s issue 15 of Performing Recovery!

This issue’s cover star is Sims Holland, who has brought her award-winning show Learning to Human from the U.S. to the U.K. for the first time. She spoke to Performing Recovery about how her performance developed, and how being a “shit show” has created a cross-generational conversation.

We also have an article from Jeremiah Gardner of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation about a recovery festival that took place all the way back in 1976! He gives us a full and detailed history of this amazing historic happening, which included Dick Van Dyke and Buzz Aldrin.

We also speak to Leon Clowes about his new album, opera, and his motivations for beginning so many different art disciplines.

We also spoke to participants in Liverpool’s Laugh for Life project, which helps people deal with trauma through stand-up comedy.

Many of you will recognise this issue’s back cover as a TV icon from our childhoods. It was drawn by Danny, who, along with Chloe, founded the Clear Canvas Collective in Brighton.

We also have a full rundown of Portraits of Recovery’s September programme for Recovery Month, and, of course, news, events, art and poetry.
