This September, Chester Visual Arts and Fallen Angels Dance Theatre (FADT) are collaborating to bring a powerful, immersive experience that showcases the transformative power of art in addiction recovery. As part of Recovery Month, the exhibition celebrates the incredible talent of local individuals on their recovery journey.
The Recovery Month Exhibition
The Recovery Month Exhibition (September 19 – 28) at Chester Visual Arts features a collection of artwork created by people in recovery. This exhibition aims to not only highlight the artistic talents of those involved but also demonstrate how creative expression can provide an outlet for healing and transformation. Art has a unique ability to offer hope, reflect inner struggles, and showcase the emotional depth of people who have battled addiction and mental health challenges.

By sharing their journey through creative works, participants aim to inspire audiences to view recovery as a path of growth and empowerment.
Immersive Digital Dance
As part of the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to preview Samadhi, an immersive digital dance installation. Samadhi, a creation of Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, was developed in collaboration with people in recovery from substance use and mental health issues from Chester and Liverpool.

The term “Samadhi,” rooted in Indian spiritual traditions, refers to a state of deep concentration and union with universal consciousness. The immersive installation embodies this idea, guiding participants through a journey of healing using dance, light, and sound. Through this digital artwork, audiences are invited to experience the movements and emotions of individuals in recovery, gaining insight into the process of reconnecting with oneself and finding inner peace.
After its preview in Chester, Samadhi will be featured in Beyond the Surface, an extended exhibition at The Turnpike Gallery in Leigh (Greater Manchester). This exhibition, running from September 26 to November 30, celebrates ten years of Fallen Angels’ impactful work in supporting recovery in the Greater Manchester area.

Upcoming Workshops and Discussions
Alongside the exhibitions, a series of workshops and talks will be held, further exploring the role of art in the recovery process. Notably, Mark Prest, Director & CEO of Portraits of Recovery, will be hosting a Q&A session to discuss how artistic expression can be a pivotal part of the recovery journey.
This important conversation will delve into how creativity not only offers a voice to those in recovery but also challenges societal perceptions of addiction and mental health, shifting the narrative from one of shame to one of resilience and hope.
As FADT celebrates a decade of empowering individuals through dance and creativity, exhibitions like Recovery Month and Beyond the Surface remind us of the profound role that art can play in the process of healing. Fallen Angels exists to support people in recovery from addiction and those living with a mental health condition to transform their lives and share their recovery journey through dance, performance and creativity.

This activity is made possible through funding from Arts Council England.
